Buford, GA – The Peach State Basketball Rising Stars Camp has become a popular stop for the premier talent in the southeastern part of the United States. Alumni of the event, which caters to seventh through ninth graders, include Andraya Carter, Kaela Davis, Breanna McDonald, Sydney Wallace and Tiffany Mitchell, just to name a few. There’s a term that we use around the office called the “genetic lottery” that we use to describe the top players at any level of play (DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, WNBA). The term is not just a physical description as certain players are blessed with a mental understanding that far exceeds the ability of some of their classmates to grasp certain on floor concepts. The best players usually have a combination of physical gifts (quickness, strength, mechanics) and the mental understanding (IQ, comprehension) to put it all together. Evaluation As a combo skill forward, Drummond spends most of her time on the perimeter and is at her best offensively in the midrange area. She is a solid offensive threat who can score it with jumpers off the catch, dribble or at the rim. Evaluation Vinson is a talented young guard who can play on or off the ball - she’s a sharp shooter who already possesses really good form at the top of her shot. She has an extended followthrough with both hands which is rare for a guard this early. Her handle and mobility allows her to get into gaps in the lane off the dribble. She likes to pass the ball and would gladly give up a basket for a teammate to finish the play. Auburn, AL - The Auburn one-day Elite Camp was the first event held inside the school's brand new on campus Auburn Arena. As nice as the facility is, it wasn't the highlight of the day's event. There were 30 of the region's top prospects on hand for instruction for head coach Nell Fortner and her staff. There are many factors that we try to take into account when positioning players including physical attributes, on floor activity level, and pure production in games. As the 2011 class finishes their junior year of high school and moves to the top of the high school totem pole, we take an updated look at the class itself. Since our last update on May 5th, we’ve been all around the country to see players in the class perform. From our brand new number one player UConn commit Kaleena Lewis (Santa Ana, CA/Mater Dei HS) to our #100 ranked player UGA commit Erika Ford (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee HS), we’ve seen as many players over the past six weeks as any group in the country. The roster consisted of fifty solid basketball players from around the Southeast and even beyond. With a roster of alumni that could serve as a who’s who in women’s basketball the likes of China Crosby, (Virginia), Erika Morrow (Syracuse), Sammy Prahalis, (Ohio State) and Epiphanny Prince, (Rutgers/Chicago Sky) have all graced the floor in the bi-annual tournament. On the floor I thought that all the players that we currently have in the Top 50 had at least solid performances. We’ll have a full recap next week but for now here are three names amongst the two hundred plus that were noteworthy (one per class): Event Recap: Nike Midwest Showdown Day One Cincinnati, OH-- The Nike Midwest Showdown presented by All Ohio, has become the mecca of girls grassroots basketball during the Memorial Day weekend. With a over a 140 teams traveling from around the nation to compete at the highest of levels, their was plenty of talent on display. College Prospect Evaluation: Bria Venson Evaluation Venson is a legit 6-foot plus post player with real size. A lefty, she brings a warrior-like mentality to the block. She has a set jumper out to 15 feet and touch around the basket with either hand though she is left hand dominant. For a player her size, she has soft feet and is able to run the floor as well as make go-to moves on the block. College Prospect Evaluation: Anna Claire Knight
Evaluation A legit 5-foot-10 and change wing player, Knight has a pinpoint jumper and solid overall ball skill. A JumpOffPlus.com Top 20 player in the state of Georgia, she might be the state’s best shooter in the junior class. She possesses good size and isn’t afraid to put the ball on the floor to create. Event Recap: Hoop Group Jam Fest Union, NJ – The Hoop Group Jam Fest saw a number of the northeast region's best summer teams face off in what for some was a Memorial Day tune up of sorts. With many of the top programs in that reside in the northeast in attendance, there was a good amount of talent cycling through the three sites that Hoop Group used for the event. College Prospect Evaluation: Kelsey Grant Grant is a 5-foot-8 shooting guard with real range. I had the chance to watch Kelsey in two events this spring prior to getting in the evaluation workout so I thought I had a pretty good idea of her skill set coming into the gym. Event Recap: Wallace Prather Classic Atlanta, Ga. -- The Wallace Prather Classic, hosted by the Wallace Prather Celtics director Renardo Hudson, was loaded with some of the best players in the Atlanta area. She is a skilled guard with real range on her jumper and has a good work ethic on and off the floor. College Prospect Evaluation: Jessica Reece Evaluation There aren’t many legit six foot three post players that manage to slip through the cracks. Class of 2010 post Jessica Reece is one that will be a great spring sign for a school needing a real-sized post player.
