The JumpOffPlus.com was in the building at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday. There were several young talented prospects at this event. Here’s a quick look at six prospects who stood out during the event:
#5: Nicole Moody, Class of 2011 5’8” PG (Euless, TX)
Moody was one of the most athletic guards at this event while bringing good size for the point guard position. She was explosive off the dribble as she seemed to get into the lane at will. When slashing to the basket, she created shots for herself and her teammates. She also showed good court savvy on one play by posting up a smaller guard and finishing on the block; on another play, she had a great backdoor cut to score an open layup. She even hit a few perimeter shots to show a well-rounded game while being a good passer.
#17: Leslie Vorpahl, Class of 2013 5’5” PG (San Antonio, TX)
Throughout the scrimmages, Vorpahl showed solid ball-handling skills and the ability to be a great passer. She consistently got into the lane and created shots for herself and others.
#38: Whitney Bunn, Class of 2013 5’7” PG (Zebulon, NC)
Whitney Bunn was one of the more impressive standouts this past weekend in Columbus. She was very explosive to the basket and was good at creating shots for others. She consistently got to the free throw line and she hit a several perimeter shots while being closely guarded (including a step back 3-pointer). As she matures, it might help her to get more lift from her shot.
#43: Kara Wright, Class of 2012 5’10” Guard (Louisville, KY)
Kara Wright was one of the more athletic, big guards this weekend. Her offensive game is primarily that of a slasher. On one play, she blocked a shot near the opposing team’s basket and then went coast-to-coast for an acrobatic layup. When handling the ball, she stays low with her dribble and this allows her to be very explosive to the basket. A tough player, Wright consistently hustled on both offense and defense. She reminds of Kamiko Williams when I saw her play in the fall of 2006.
#55: Tierra Floyd, Class of 2015 5’10” Guard (Toledo, OH)
This event could have easily been titled, Are You Better Than a Seventh Grader because Tierra Floyd was one of the top competitors here. It’s an understatement to say that she plays well beyond her age (12 years old). She consistently hit several 3-pointers from well-beyond the arc with a high shot release. Additionally, Tierra was very savvy as she displayed a basketball IQ of someone much older. She read the defense well, made reverse layups, and executed shot fakes with a one dribble pull-up jumper. Defensively, Tierra was very active as she harassed opposing players and she shows the potential to be a lock-down defender. It’s going to be interesting to watch her expand her game.
#84: Olivia Wrencher, Class of 2012 6’3” Post/Forward (West Chester, OH)
Olivia Wrencher was impressive as she showed the potential to play both inside and out as a physical post player. She has solid handles for a frontcourt player and she made a quick in-and-out move with the dribble in the open court. Her face-up game and footwork were good for a post player her size and age as she made a quick slashing move through the lane for a layup on one play, and then a two dribble reverse lay-up on another. She also made some good interior passes displaying a solid basketball IQ. Defensively, Olivia usually keeps her hands up while refraining from swatting at the ball. She also dived onto the floor for a loose ball.
